According to marketingprofs.com, in 2005 more than $35 billion was spent on events. More importantly perhaps, over two-thirds of company executives questioned in 2005 by a major meetings industry trade publication felt strongly that experiential events were effective in realizing a company's marketing goals.

So, why is it in 2006, a year when many in the meetings and events industry believe the market is poised to bounce back to pre-9/11 days, that even contemplating introducing the word "experiential" into the planning mix for their clients is still taboo for some planners?

1500 sales executives from all over the world gathered together in Dallas to participate in an annual company meeting. Here, the company would be launching their new marketing positioning and presenting the 2006 sales plan. This was an enormous investment in time and money, as well as opportunity cost (sales people not selling for 3 days!). The event owner needed to ensure that time was used wisely.

Where do you think meetings technology is headed?

MICHAEL BOULT, PRES/CEO: It's an evolution. The usability issue, for sure, is top of mind, especially with occasional users. There's more to be done from a global perspective. From the more consumer-oriented technologies, we can learn a lot of lessons from how people interact. It's a complicated issue and business proposition that we're trying to solve. Simplicity and usability are things we know we need to invest in.
